But… I’m Too Busy: The Working Mom’s Guide to Girl Scouts

Guest Editorial from Melissa Moody

How many times have you said that? I say it too… In addition to co-leading my daughter’s middle school Girl Scout troop, I am also their cookie mom. I also help with volunteer recruitment and troop formation for our area, and run both our fall product and cookie sale for our area. I also co-chair our community day camp each year. I teach Sunday school at my church and serve on our executive board. I’m married to a very understanding husband, and also have a son in college locally. My daughter is also on her middle school track team, and will be joining marching band next year. My son was also in marching band and indoor percussion ensemble (both of which take place during our fall product and cookie season). I do all these ...

Girl Scout Lingo: What Does That Mean?

Girl Scouts has been around for more than 100 years, which means we’ve had a lot of time to pick up a lot of traditions and quirky terminology. When you first join, it can feel like everyone is speaking another language!

To help bridge the gap, we’ve created a glossary of the most common Girl Scout words and phrases. We recommend keeping this page bookmarked, because we’ll continue to update it as needed!

Girl Scout Traditions: Space Explorers!

Here’s a fun fact: virtually every female astronaut who has flown in space is a Girl Scout alum. That’s means more than one third of NASA’s space shuttle missions have had a Girl Scout flying on them! We count among our alums women like Dr. Kathryn Sullivan (the first American female to spacewalk), Susan Helms (the first woman to serve as a crew member on ...

Highest Awards: Examples of Community Needs for Your Take Action Project

When planning your Take Action project, sometimes it’s hard to identify a broad community issue to later focus your research and investigative efforts around. That’s one reason why the Girl Scout Journeys already have themes that walk you through discovering more about a topic, making connections with the issue locally and globally, and using the things you discovered and the connections you identified as a guide when planning your Take Action project.

But when ...

Honoring Our Girl Scout Sisters from Wisconsin Troop 3055

Our hearts are heavy with grief as we mourn the loss of our Girl Scout sisters from Wisconsin Troop 3055. The girls and volunteers were all living our mission, making their community a better place while following all proper safety protocols as they cleaned up a stretch of highway they had adopted. We’ve been hearing from many of you across the Movement who are asking for guidance on how to help, honor, and reach out to the families impacted by the tragic car crash that took the ...
